Big Pit Group Project - Blaenavon
Margitta Davis, Ann Notley, Penny Turnbull, Milli stein and Jan Winstanley are a group of creative textile artists based in the Brecon Beacons working under the collective name of the Mad Mountain Stitchers.
Over the past nine years we have worked on many individual pieces. along the way we chose to do group pieces, Tretower Court and Patricio Church are among them. our latest project Big Pit is a blending and celebration of our different styles on one large piece. Individual pictures have also been achieved.
Working on Big Pit, in various media, was a fun challenge especially as the site is not far from our work place. We were therefore available to visit many times to get a feel of the place.
Amongst the materials used were felt, organza, calico, cottons, dyed and painted leather, beads, silk tops, voils, embroidery wire, various threads, some space dyed and variegated etc.
Techniques used were a applique and reverse applique, stumpwork, embelishing, hand and machine embroidery, needlelace, stenciling etc.
We would like to acknowledge the support given by everyone at Big Pit, especially Kathryn Stowers. Images supplied by the Royal Comission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales were invaluable.
